Effective fundraising begins with a need. Prospect research supports the act of raising funds to fill the identified need. In order to raise funds effectively, the fundraiser must be fully aware of specifics of the need and have a very good idea of whom he or she is going to approach to provide the funds. The fundraiser who knows something of the background, interests, and giving capacity of a prospective donor will be much more successful in bringing in the money to meet the need than the one who is unprepared. Good prospect research needs to be done in an organized, methodical fashion. When the development officer gives a name to the researcher, the researcher must have a plan. The plan must include many resources of information for analysis to aid in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective donors. Prospect research should be viewed as a vital stop on the record-keeping trail. Including the researcher in identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship insures that vital data on donors will be tracked and preserved over the coming years. HOW
