Degree Options

ELECTRONIC MEDIA MANAGEMENT OPTION

Operational and management aspects of independent, studio, and network electronic media--including business structures, personnel, budgets, advertising, sales, research, and regulation of the media industries.

A minor is also offered in this option.

FILM PRODUCTION OPTION

Conceptualization, production, directing, editing, and distribution of film projects for both entertainment and informational purposes.

MEDIA THEORY AND CRITICISM OPTION

History, theory, and critical analysis of the culture of film and electronic media--providing a background for all professional training, with specific preparation for careers in teaching or research. Screenwriting Option: research, structure, and writing for dramatic and non-dramatic scripts for film, radio, television, and multimedia.

MULTIMEDIA OPTION

Pre-production, production and distribution of digital material for film, television and the World Wide Web. Students acquire effective computer skills to design websites, create streaming audio and video, design and create DVDs and CD-ROMS, and develop games in the interactive media environment.

RADIO & TELEVISION PRODUCTION OPTIONS

Pre-production, production, and post-production techniques for all electronic media formats--encompassing directing and all other creative aspects of studio and field production.

SCREENWRITING OPTION

Research, structure, and writing for dramatic and non-dramatic scripts for film, radio, television, and multimedia.

OPTION - Film Production

A PORTFOLIO REVIEW is required for students interested in entering the Film Production Option. Application package has been revised by the Film Option Faculty. All applications for the Fall 2009 semester must use the updated version. Click here to download.

Students interested in entering the Film Production Option in the Department of Cinema and Television Arts must first complete their G.E. requirements and take 5 prerequisite courses. These courses are CTVA 100 (Introduction to Mass Communications), CTVA 210 (Television-Film Aesthetics), CTVA 220 (Foundations of Media Writing), Art 250 (Photography I), and CTVA 250 (Fundamentals of Film Production). The courses may be taken here at CSUN or elsewhere. Once these courses have been taken the student must apply for Portfolio Review. If accepted the student will enter the Film Production Option. If not accepted the student can choose another option in the department or re-apply.

Program Sequence

This is the prescribed sequence of study for CTVA majors accepted into the Film Production Option after portfolio review. It is to be used in conjunction with the Graduation Check form. Any alteration of the sequence must be approved by your advisor and the Film Production Option Head.

SEMESTER ONE

Editing students must take CTVA 352 Digital Editing in Semester One and CTVA 356 Advanced Film Editing in Semester Two before taking CTVA 452 Senior Film Project in Semester Three. CTVA 352 can be substituted as a CTVA Upper Division Elective course.


SEMESTER TWO

Students will prep senior project proposal and script. The scripts should be 10 minutes in length and the writer must take CTVA 421 Writing the Short Film in Semester Two. CTVA 421 can be substituted as a CTVA Upper Division Elective course.


SEMESTER THREE

SEMESTER FOUR

Complete any incompletes, general education requirements and electives not finished.

* A note on CTVA 452 Senior Film Project. The scripts should be 10 minutes in length and the writer must have taken CTVA 421 Writing the Short Film in Semester Two. The 7 key positions on the production team are Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Editor (2), and Sound (2). The Producer and Director must have completed one of the Skill Area courses in Semester Two before taking CTVA 452 in Semester Three. Cinematograhers must have completed CTVA 357 Advanced Cinematography in Semester Two before taking CTVA 452 in Semester Three. Editors must have completed CTVA 352 Digital Editing in Semester One and CTVA 356 Advanced Film Editing in Semester Two before taking CTVA 452 in Semester Three. Sound people must have completed CTVA 358 Advanced Film Sound in Semester Two before taking CTVA 452 in Semester Three.
