Black and White Eye
Who's Watching You?
Privacy and Technology
Where do you live? Have you ever visited a pornography site on the Internet?

What types of books do you check out at the library? What’s on your medical record?

Wait –you don’t have to answer those questions.

Thanks to technology, the answers are already out there. Disturbed?

So are advocates of privacy who feel “that emerging technologies…
are eroding Americans’ right to privacy” (Marshall, 2001, par. 1).

We have become a surveillance society where panoptic
observation serves as a mechanism of control (Campbell & Carlson, 2002).

This website will consider the issue in more detail by focusing on the notion of privacy,
considering how technology can violate privacy, analyzing the implications of this,
and providing resources for protecting yourself.
