People with diabetes are at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke. Serum lipid levels tend to be altered (elevated TG and LDL-cholesterol, reduced HDL -cholesterol) and other risk factors are commonly present including: hypertension, obesity, lack of exercise, age, and smoking.

Elevated blood glucose levels also contribute to the increased risk of CVD possibly through the glycosylation of proteins including LDL apoproteins. Hyperinsulinemia has also been implicated as a risk factor to contribute to the progression of atherosclerosis leading to CVD and stroke.
