Hypoglycemia as an acute complication of DM typically occurs as a result of inappropriate BG management. Factors that may lead to a hypoglycemic episode include:
  • excessive insulin injection
  • excessive oral hypoglycemic agents
  • excessive physical activity
  • inadequate intake
  • vomiting/diarrhea

Risk for hypoglycemic episodes increases in long-term diabetics because symptoms become less noticeable and in type 2 diabetics practicing intensive insulin therapy.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia include:

  • Hunger
  • Headache
  • Sweating
  • Shakiness
  • Nervousness
  • Confusion
  • Disorientation
  • Slurred speech
  • Coma
  • Death
