Hypoglycemia as an acute complication of DM typically occurs as a result of inappropriate BG management. Factors that may lead to a hypoglycemic episode include:
- excessive insulin injection
- excessive oral hypoglycemic agents
- excessive physical activity
- inadequate intake
- vomiting/diarrhea
Risk for hypoglycemic episodes increases in long-term diabetics because symptoms become less noticeable and in type 2 diabetics practicing intensive insulin therapy.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia include:
- Hunger
- Headache
- Sweating
- Shakiness
- Nervousness
- Confusion
- Disorientation
- Slurred speech
- Coma
- Death
