Testing for diabetes should be considered at ages over 45 and repeated at 3-year intervals. Testing at younger ages and with a higher frequncy is recommended if the patient:
  • Is obese
  • Has a family member with diabetes
  • Is a member of a high-risk population
  • Is hypertensive
  • Is dyslipidemic
  • Has gestational diabetes mellitus or has delivered baby > 9 lb
  • Had previous impaired glucose tolerance
