Testing for diabetes should be considered at ages over 45 and repeated at 3-year intervals. Testing at younger ages and with a higher frequncy is recommended if the patient:
- Is obese
- Has a family member with diabetes
- Is a member of a high-risk population
- Is hypertensive
- Is dyslipidemic
- Has gestational diabetes mellitus or has delivered baby > 9 lb
- Had previous impaired glucose tolerance
