Recently, the American Diabetes Association recommended a new classification scheme for diabetes, formerly known as insulin dependent (IDDM) and non-insulun dependent (NIDDM) diabetes mellitus. The rationale for the new classification of diabetes is based on the concept that this new scheme should be etiologically based, not based on the treatment (insulin injections versus no injections). Instead of IDDM and NIDDM, Type 1 and Type 2 is the preferred nomenclature.
Other, less common types of diabetes include gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), or hyperglycemia of pregnancy and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). For specific information on each type of diabetes, click on the category listed on the left menu bar.
