Nutrition assessment is the evaluation of the nutritional health of an individual. Information used in this evaluation includes historical, anthropometric, laboratory (biochemical), and physical exam data. This information is collected and integrated to appraise the nutritional status of the individual.
Nutrition assessments are performed to identify current or potential nutrition-related problems so that corrective or preventative action can be taken. The dietitian uses the nutrition assessment as the basis for recommendations concerning diet prescription, route of feeding, and patient education. An in-depth nutrition assessment involves a medical chart review and patient interview.
Components of a nutrition assessment include:
- Historical Information
- Anthropometric Data
- Biochemical Data
- Physical Examination
