Insulin therapy by injection is the medical treatment for diabetics with insulin deficiency. Type 1 diabetics require insulin therapy, and many type 2 diabetics need insulin therapy for glycemic control. Insulin injections for type 2 diabetics, however, are a last resort - only used if diet, exercise and oral medication fails. If MNT and exercise do not achieve adequate control for the type 2 diabetic, oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA) are used.
