The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) was a large, multi-center study conducted on 1,441 volunteers with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus over a ten year period. This study showed that keeping blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible slows the onset and progression of eye, kidney, and nerve diseases caused by diabetes.

It also demonstrated that any sustained lowering of blood sugar helps, even if the person has a history of poor control. This study compared the effects of two treatment regimes; standard therapy and intensive control on the complications of diabetes. For more information on the DCCT, see the following website:
