Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Long-term complications of diabetes include dysfunction and/or failure of various organs including the eyes, nerves, kidneys, heart and blood vessels. Diabetes is a multisystem disease - insulin replacement does not completely prevent the onset of complications.
