The best CHEAP compass
resembles the ones on the LEFT side of this cased set, mfgd by Staedler:

Students have found similar
compasses alone and in a set with plastic protractor and ruler for under $5 at local
office supply stores.

Draw precise circles with the precision
metal compass. It has a spring-bow head and the center wheel has a nickel
finish that resists rust. The maximum circle diameter on the compass is approximately
10.375", while the compass's length is 6". The compass includes one
piece of drafting lead and an eraser.

The following have “safety
point”, which usually means slip-and-slide inaccuracy and frustration.
Especially look out for the
ones with all-plastic “points”. They
are not very pointy, and are guaranteed to slip.
