K-12 Teaching Geography Workshops

On Saturday, May 3, 2008, Dr. Phil Gersmehl, Professor and Director of the New York Center for Geographic Learning at Hunter College, City University of New York will present four workshops for K-12 teachers on the teaching of geography in social studies and environmental science curricula.

Dr. Gersmehl is the author of Teaching Geography, a popular book that combines both theory and practical, hands-on exercises designed to teach spatial skills to elementary and secondary school students.

His appearance at this year's conference is generously underwritten by the Association of American Geographers for the purpose of strengthening the teaching of geography in K-12 schools and fostering a stronger connection between college geography faculty and K-12 teachers.  The annual California Geographical Society conference is a perfect venue for this special workshop.

Ideas and activities presented by Dr. Gersmehl fit within the California State Content Standards.  The workshops are free for teachers, administrators and school board members.  They are invited to attend one or more of the workshops on Saturday but must pay the registration fees for the CGS conference in order to participate.

The workshops are held on Saturday so teachers will be able to enroll in CGS field trips held on Friday and Sunday and attend paper sessions and other functions on Saturday when not in workshop.
