Register for the 63rd Annual CGS Conference !


The California Geographical Society invites you to attend our 2009 Conference in the Santa Ynez Valley May 1-3.

The deadline to submit presentations has passed.
You are still very welcome to attend the conference.

We are proud to offer completely on-line registration for the 2009 California Geographical Society conference. We believe this will enhance participation by making it easier for individuals and institutions to both register and pay conference costs. On line registration should also greatly increase the accuracy of our record keeping, while vastly reducing the accounting workload of conference organizers.

Instructions (PLEASE READ!!!)

Before you begin the registration process you should have your credit card or PayPal information ready. If you are presenting a paper, map or poster, you'll need your abstract and other information as well. There are five steps for most conference attendees.

  1. Enter your name, address and affiliation and other basic contact information in the form below.
  2. If you are presenting a paper, map, poster, or participating in a panel discussion, you will enter information identifying the title, abstract and other information the CGS needs to arrange sessions and the abstract guide. You should prepare your abstract on a word processor before you start the registration process.
  3. You will select options for membership, registration, field trips and meals.

YOU NEED TO SUBMIT BOTH A REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND A PAYMENT. THESE ARE TWO SEPARATE TASKS.

  1. Open the CGS PayPal portal window, click on the fee options you have selected during the registration process and submit your payment electronically (or mail a check to the California Geographical Society)
  2. Click on the "Register with CGS" button to submit your REGISTRATION information.


If you would like, you can open the PayPal window now and complete the registration information and payment information simultaneously, but DON'T FORGET to register and pay .

  • Access to the Internet is not normally an option during presentations, though you may contact the society's president Jennifer Helzer directly if it is absolutely required for your presentation.
    You are expected to familiarize yourself with all hardware and software before presenting.
    Poster and printed map presenters should bring a foam or card board to mount the poster or printed map.
    Easels will be provided.
    You are encouraged to bring backups and hard copies (transparencies) for all digital media.
  • White boards may not be available.

Step 3: Select your Membership, Registration, Food and Field Trip Options.

There are two basic payment options for those who are pre-registering for the conference. You are strongly encouraged to pay via PayPal (including credit card/debit card). You may mail a check to the California Geographical Society if you are unable to pay via PayPal, but delays in processing your registration may undermine your chances to secure a place on field trips. We strongly encourage all registrants to submit all payments for themselves, but in those cases where student costs must be submitted by a sponsor (such as an academic department or sponsoring faculty) please note who is paying for whom, and what in the "special needs and concerns" response box below. You are also welcome to contact Jennifer Helzer or Steve Graves if you have questions about unusual payment circumstances.

Please note that your individual registrations will not be considered complete until payment has been received.

Meals and Meal Options NOW DISABLED

We regret that we can no longer accept new requests for meals. Our request to caterers has gone off and we can now not guarantee that we could actually supply the meals you've paid for. You may inquire at the conference registration about available meal options.

The California Geographical Society provides meals to conference attendees who choose to pay for this fun convenience. There is a Friday Night Barbeque, generally featuring hamburgers and hot dogs; a light breakfast on Saturday; a catered box lunch on Saturday; and a banquet style dinner at the Saturday Night Awards Ceremony.You can either order a meal package which includes three meals, or you may select to only to pay for the individual meals that interest you. You may also mix and match meal options if you are registering on behalf of others, but take care not to double order by selecting individual meals that are included in a meal package.

Students who are presenting a paper at the conference, have completed step 2 above and plan on attending the awards banquet on Saturday, are eligible to receive a free ticket to the Saturday evening award banquet. Student presenters therefore should not chose from the three meal package options, but rather should select from the individual meal options and the "free" option for student presenters.

Field trips are a highlight of each conference for many folks. Below are the outstanding field trip options for this year's conference. Click on the "Link to Details" link to open a webpage with additional details. If you want to go on one or more of the conference field trips, enter the number of participants in the option boxes below. Click in the bottom boxes to calculate the costs. Donations

The California Geographical Society awards outstanding students with a variety of competitive awards and scholarships. Maintenance of the endowments that fund these awards is partly dependent upon the generosity of Society members who graciously donate to these funds. We encourage you to donate to one of the funds below. All donations are 100% tax-deductible. The California Geographical Society appreciates your support! David W. Lantis Scholarship Fund – supports one graduate and one undergraduate scholarship
Tom L. McKnight Paper Award Fund – supports three graduate and three undergraduate awards
Joe Beaton Poster Award Fund– funds three graduate/undergraduate awards
Student Travel Assistance Fund – financial assistance for students to attend the CGS meeting.You can donate via PayPal to any of the scholarship funds or the California Geographical Society's general fund.
Such donations are accepted separately from conference registration costs to assist management of your tax deductions.

How do I pay?

After you have double checked the accuracy of your totals and options above, you must decide how you're going to pay.

We urge you to pay using PayPal / Credit Card. This option greatly aids our ability to keep an accurate and timely accounting of meals, field trips, etc.

You may also mail a check, but we can not guarantee your spot on a field trip if your payment is delayed.
