Welcome to the California Geographical Society's Web Site

Greetings! Plans are well underway for the upcoming spring conference. This year we will meet in "the O.C.", Orange County, on the campus of California State University, Fullerton.

We'll kick of our meeting with the Friday bar-b-que at the wonderful Fullerton Arboretum , at the newly constructed, highly "green" Nikkei Heritage Museum Pavilion.

Though we'll have a wide range of exciting field trips focused on the human and physical geographies of the local area, this year's conference will be sure to appeal to those interested in planning, urban conservation and tourism.

Mark your calendars for April 30 through May 2nd, 2010.

Please visit the links on the left navigation bar to read more about this year's conference.

In Memoriam: Larry Ford

Photo of Larry Ford. Courtesy of Dr. Brenda KaysarIt is with considerable sadness that we report that Dr. Larry Ford, Professor of Geography at San Diego State University and long-time friend of the CGS, passed away on September 17th, 2009. Dr. Ford’s research interests were broad, with special focus on urban design, comparative urbanization, and historic preservation. An infectious passion for cities, landscape observation and interpretation, and above all, getting out into the field, characterized his scholarly work. Dr. Ford’s students and peers enjoyed the benefits of his urban explorations and writings, and his class lectures and conference presentations were abundantly illustrated with thoughtfully photographed slides from over forty years of travels. A prodigious scholar, Dr. Ford authored six books, including the influential Cities and Buildings, as well as more than 100 journal articles and other publications. He was a long-standing member of a number of organizations including the AAG, the APCG, the CGS, and the NCGE, and he received, among many honors, the California Geographical Society’s Distinguished Educator Award in 2004. In addition to his academic accomplishments, his sense of humor and wit made him an exceptional teacher, advisor, mentor, and role model to hundreds of students and peers alike, and a dear friend who will be greatly missed.
