FULL-TIME FACULTY POSITION OPENING

Qualifications:    The candidate will have a generalist background in Central American Studies, preferably with a specialization in Afro-Caribbean Central American identities and cultures and/or the Central American Atlantic coast region. A doctorate or its equivalency is required, although an ABD will be considered if the candidate completes the dissertation by the employment date. The best candidate will complement existing faculty specializations in anthropology, literature, gender studies and cultural studies. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working with an ethnically and culturally diverse student population.
CSUN is a Learning Centered University. The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate.
At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

Responsibilities: The Central American Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program, so the candidate is expected to have a good grasp of comparative methodologies in the humanities and social sciences. The program is in the developmental stages and currently offers a B.A. and a Minor in the field. In the long term, continued growth of the program is anticipated and potentially the establishment of the program into a separate academic department. The candidate will work closely with other faculty, Central American students and community members towards building links between academia and the larger Central American community. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the field through the publication of scholarly and/or policy related articles, participation in professional organizations and/or community network development. The California State University Northridge campus serves an extensive student body, many of who are of working-class origins and the first in their families to attend college. All professors are expected to be dedicated to advancing the academic skills of their students. The standard teaching load at the university is 12 units per semester, although reassigned time may be available for research and/or curriculum development.
