This is the rule for division of a monomial given in your modules on page 41 .

Example: Divide 24x³ + 16x²y² - 4x²y² by 8x²y

Solution:  

The process we will use for division of a polynomial by a polynomial in this section will be cancellation of terms.

Example: Subtract the sum of -x² and 7x²y from the product of x and 

Solution :

The sum of -x² and 7x²y is (-x² + 7x²y)

So we have

= -x²y(7 + y) - (-x² + 7x²y)
 
 

= -7x²y - x²y² + x² - 7x²y

= - 14x²y - x²y² + x²

Example: Evaluate when x = -1 and y = 2 .
