Notes - Mod. VII - Chapter 4

Division by a monomial

This is the rule for division of a monomial given in your modules on page 41 .

Example: Divide 24x3 + 16x2y2 - 4x2y2 by 8x2y

Solution:

Division by a polynomial

The process we will use for division of a polynomial by a polynomial in this section will be cancellation of terms.

Example:

Solution:

Simplifying Algebraic expressions

Example: Subtract the sum of -x2 and 7x2y from the product of x and

Solution :

The sum of -x2 and 7x2y is (-x2 + 7x2y)

So we have

= -x2y(7 + y) - (-x2 + 7x2y)

= -7x2y - x2y2 + x2 - 7x2y

= - 14x2y - x2y2 + x2

Evaluating algebraic expressions

Example: Evaluate when x = -1 and y = 2 .
