Professional Interestes:
Dr. Skylar has conducted research and presented at local, state, and national conferences in using technological applications to enhance special education in the following areas: Adapting WebQuests for students with Learning Disabilities; Web Accessibility for people with disabilities; assistive technology devices/resources; using and field testing online modules available at the IRIS Center; using web-conferencing to enhance online learning and communicate with support providers; online mentoring via modules and discussions; and pilot using an electronic portfolio with secondary special educators.

Background:

Dr. Skylar has been a special educator working at the secondary level working with students who have Mild/Moderate disabilities. She has also been a special education facilitator/coordinator and itinerant specialist working with teachers in administering the alternate assessment in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Skylar is also the faculty advisor for the educational honor society, Pi Lambda Theta in the College of Education. She is also the coordinator for field testing IRIS Center materials developed by Vanderbilt University and used by faculty in the COE and an expert trainer for the Center. She has also received a COE research grant and an online course development grant to redesign courses to be taught in the online environment. She also works with faculty in the department to facilitate/provide support in incorporating online components in their courses. She is also a co-director for a Personnel Preparation grant, “Technology Enhanced Culturally Responsive Intern Program for Secondary Special Educators,” funded by the U.S. Department of Education. She enjoys traveling, outdoor activities, technology, and her family~two dogs and her son.

The Virtual Classroom: Increasing Interaction and Achievement in an Online Environment Using Second Life and Web Conferencing

The study will measure student performance outcomes and satisfaction within two learning environments via synchronous lectures using Second Life and Web Conferencing.

2007-2010 Personnel Preparation Grant, Office of Special Education Programs

Technology Enhanced Culturally-Responsive (TEC) Intern Program for Secondary Special Educators

In partnership with Dr. Nancy Burstein, the project trains secondary special education teachers in working with Mild/Moderate Disabilities. The 2-year program is a technology-enhanced program where students progress as cohort in classes and travel to campus once bi-weekly.A stipend of up to $5,000 per year is available.
