The faculty athletics representative is a member of the faculty or an administrator who holds faculty rank who is designated by the chief executive officer to represent the institution and its faculty in the institutions relationships with the NCAA and its conference.
The faculty athletics representative is one of five recognized individuals authorized to make contact with the NCAA membership services staff. The chief executive officer or designated substitute, director of athletics, senior woman administrator and the compliance coordinator are the other individuals permitted to do so.
The faculty athletics representative plays a strategic and vital role in three major areas of institutional responsibilities under the NCAA requirements of academic integrity, institutional control and the well being of student-athletes. In all three areas, the faculty athletics representative serves as the senior faculty advisor to the President and as a critical communications link between the faculty and the Athletics Department. To be an effective advisor/communicator in this regard, the faculty athletics representative must be knowledgeable regarding the athletic program and the rules and regulations of the NCAA and the Big West; and must maintain positive working relationships with key members of the athletics and academic staffs.
