Software Review 1: Java UpdateThe Java Issue Java is an object oriented programming language that every computer uses; it was created by Sun Microsystems. Java is also a platform, called "Java RunTime Environment," (Sun's version) or "Java Virtual Machine" which is Microsoft's platform. Java programs, called applets, automatically download from web pages in order to enhance the web experience; these nifty little programs can do anything from giving the time, to helping mix colors for design. They are very cool. However, they do automatically download into our computers, they do so by first landing in what is called the "sandbox", a place that is separated from the operating system and other programs, that could be devastated by nefarious downloads. The problem here is that there are two types of Java today: Sun's Java, and Microsoft's Java. Sun Java's Sandbox is called "Java RunTime Environment," Microsoft's Java Sandbox might as well be called " Windows" for all the problems and vulnerabilities it causes for its users, particularly the large security holes it opens. Aside from the fact that Microsoft's version of Java (Java Virtual Machine) is buggy and runs poorly on windows, it is not the legal version anymore because of a recent lawsuit in which Sun won the rights to Java use. Meanwhile, Microsoft will stop supporting Java in September. They suggest, at that time, that all of us Windows users lock down Internet Explorer security zones to only trusted sites. Sure Another fix is to download Sun's official Java Software, it's free and it works well. I downloaded it from the site and it installed itself on my computer with ease. There are some further fixes you will need to make in order to trick your windows based computers-- I always find them fussy with this kind of stuff. Indeed, this fix did present some issues with my computer but with further probing I have found the problem! A Great
