Marie Cartier is a scholar, visual /performance artist, queer activist, poet and theologian who has been active in many movements for social change.
She teaches at UC Irvine in their Film Department, and California State University Northridge in Women’s Studies. She is finishing her Ph.D. in Religion from Claremont Graduate University, with an emphasis on Women and Religion: feminist queer gender.
She has published several articles regarding the possible sacrality of the butch femme community at the mid-century. Her book, Baby You Are My Religion- 1950’s Butch Femme Bar Culture in the U.S. as Possibly Sacred Community, will be published by Equinox Press in 2009.
She has three Master of Fine Arts Degrees - Film, Theater, and Visual Art. She currently exhibits her installation performance project MORGASM, the Museum of Radical Gender and Sex Matrix, which explores female orgasm in a museum context.
She is a widely published poet, whose works have appeared in numerous jounals and anthologies. She has also published a book of poetry, I'm Your Daughter, Not Your Lover.
