Course Description
Learn beyond the veil and stereotypes of Islam and Muslim women & men in diverse societies;
Learn about the gender dimension of Islamism, fundamentalism, the ‘War on Terror’ in the post-9/11 context
Study democratization and modernization in ‘the Muslim World;’
Learn how sexuality and gender dynamics have become key areas of contestation in the path to modernity and democracy in many Islamic societies;
Understand commonalities and differences between the Muslim and non-Muslim communities in regard to gender roles, sexuality, and family dynamics; and
Learn and appreciate the diverse realities, experiences and agency of women and feminists in Islamic tradition;
Examine what it means to be a Muslim in North America.
