Note: This class counts as an Elective for WS majors and minors. It may qualify as an elective for Communication Studies or CTVA majors (in consultation with your advisor). It also serves as one of the electives for Queer Studies minors.

Course Description

SEX, LIES & MEDIA examines how sex and gender are constructed through contemporary images in television and film. Employing a critical perspective, w e will look at representations that socialize us into narrowly defined categories of gender and sexuality. By comparing media images of women to images of “real” women in our everyday lives, the normative constructions of gender in TV & film will be explored.

In this course we will:

  • watch a lot of films and television shows!!!
  • take photographs of people we know
  • analyze representations of different ethnicities & sexualities
  • discuss bodies that transgress
  • talk about the commodification of women’s bodies
  • develop a critique of popular culture & envision alternatives
