GWS Student Conference

Please join us for the all-day GWS Student Conference. Held this year on April 29th, 2012. Panels begin at 9:30 a.m. in the morning and go through to 3:15 p.m. There is a reception from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. There will be a Keynote Address by Liz Philipose at 5:15 p.m.

March is Women's Herstory Month!

March 6, 2013 - Lilly Ledbetter - This is a special opportunity to hear Lilly Ledbetter speak about pay equity and the Fair Pay Act. this is event is co-sponsored by the University Student Union, Gender and Women's Studies Dept., Gender and Women's Studies Student Association, Campus Action Project grant, Provost Hellenbrand, Civil Discourse and Social Change Initiative, and the College of Humanities. Located in the Grand Salon, USU. 4 p.m.

March 18, 2013 - Spirituality and Social Justice - The Civil Discourse and Social Change Initiative will host a panel discussion on spirituality and social justice, which will include representatives from each of the major religions. Located in the Music Recital Hall.

March 21, 2013 - 10th Annual Take Back the Night Rally and March - Resource fair, rally, march, candlelight vigil and speak-out to end violence against women. Live performance by Natalia Zukerman. Located in the Plaza del Sol and the Women's Research and Resource Center.

March 25, 2013 - $tart $mart - There is no debate that women earn approximately 82 cents to the male dollar. The question is, why? Researchers have discovered that one of the reasons is because women are not taught to be assertive and negotiate their salaries. This three-hour workshop will teach women how to be savvy negotiators. You must RSVP for this event, as space is limited. Call 818-677-2780 to RSVP. Located in Jerome Richfield 330.

Silences book coverWe congratulate Dr. Sheena Malhotra for the release of her new co-edited anthology, entitled: Silence, Feminism, Power: Reflections at the Edges of Sound. 2013. Palgrave Macmillan.

 

We congratulate Dr. Nayereh Tohidi for being the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant towards the creation of a new minor in "Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies" at CSU, Northridge. NEH grants are highly competitive at the national level.

Phenomenal Woman Awards

The Gender and Women’s Studies Department at CSUN honors five outstanding women every two years with a Phenomenal Woman Award. The Phenomenal Woman Awards event celebrates women who have made important contributions to our community.

It also allows the Gender and Women’s Studies Department to raise funds to sponsor special programming, support student and faculty research, and finance scholarships for Women’s Studies majors. In addition, these contributions support the Women’s Resource & Research Center, the oldest continuing women’s center within the California State University system.

Welcome to Gender & Women's Studies

The Gender & Women’s Studies Department at CSUN emphasizes interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and transnational studies with a focus on gender.

It includes course work in feminist theories, women and social movements, transnational feminisms, women of color feminisms, postcolonial feminism, women’s economic conditions in the context of globalization and development, productions of women in the media and literature, queer studies, women’s health and masculinity studies.

The Gender and Women’s Studies Department teaches students to view the world with a critical analytical approach grounded in a social justice framework. The department adheres to a disciplinary practice that centers on an integrative, intersectional framing of issues concerning gender, race, class, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, age and the differently abled.

The Major and Minor

The major and minor provide a background for various careers such as law, counseling and healthcare or advanced graduate degrees in fields such as Gender Studies, Women’s Studies, education, communication, political, cultural and media studies.
