The Cal State Northridge Writing Project

"Academic content standards encourage the highest achievement of every student by defining the knowledge, concepts, and skills that students should acquire at each grade level. A standards-based system of education is an integrated system in which each element is an essential part of the whole. No single element ensures student achievement, and ineffective implementation of any aspect risks the success of the entire system. "

An Open Institute for English/language Arts Teachers K-12

How do you get where you're going if you don't have a map? The newly adopted California Common Core State Standards have the potential to frame a profound course to student learning. To navigate the path and actualize our students' potential, we must unpack the key skills and knowldege the standards require of us.

In this interactive workshop, participants will:

  • Uncover the meaning of the Common Core State Standards by delving into the murky waters of unfamiliarity;
  • Develop concrete lessons designed to optimize student learning while honing the discipline-specific literacies students will need to meet the requirements of the California Common Core State Standards;
  • Increase their comfort levels in implementing lesson plans based on the California Common Core State Standards;
  • Develop a best-practices toolkit to enhance their instructional programs; and
  • Map the existing California State English/Language Arts Standards to the Common Core State Standards.
  • Participants will finish the Institute withh specific, Common Core-aligned lessons and instructional sequences and a library of resources to guide the implementation of the CCCSS in their classrooms.
