Matafest Bringing “Boardwalk” Experience to the USU

Northridge—The University Student Union (USU) is presenting Matafest 2014 on Thursday, August 28 to welcome all students and celebrate the start of the fall semester with a fun time and all kinds of useful information at the USU’s Open House, where students can learn more about all of the services and opportunities the USU has to offer. Grab your shades and sunscreen and experience everything the USU’s “Boardwalk” has to offer – including sunshine, tasty treats and awesome performances. 

“This year’s Boardwalk theme will transform the Plaza del Sol into a beachy atmosphere,” said Stephanie Riley, events assistant for the University Student Union. “Matafest is a great way for students to experience the USU, hang out with friends, meet new people and enjoy all the fun stuff you would encounter during a day spent on the boardwalk.” 

Every CSUN student is invited to enjoy free entertainment, food, giveaways and activities along with an opportunity to gain insight and knowledge about the USU and its extensive resources and job availabilities. 

While there, they can sign up for a chance to win a $500 Matador Bookstore gift card or a free parking pass for the semester. 

Matafest will begin on Thursday, Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the USU’s Plaza del Sol and then resume that evening at the Student Recreation Pool from 5 to 7 p.m. 

The afternoon session on Plaza del Sol will feature free corn dogs and Italian ices by Dog Gone It and Frozen Crush. A free drink bar will feature aguas frescas (fresh water infused with fruit). Entertainment will include street performers, a high striker, dunk tank, caricature artists and a live performance by Surfs Up, a Beach Boys cover band. 

The celebration will continue that evening at the SRC Pool. Students can make their own s’mores and enjoy refreshing fruit. Entertainment will include a sand castle building contest and music by a live DJ.
