Black Female Students at CSUN Invited to Find Empowerment and Opportunities Through New WISDOM Program at the USU

January 26, 2017

Northridge — The University Student Union (USU) invites all Black female students at CSUN to apply and participate in a dynamic mentoring program called “WISDOM”, which is geared toward inspiring their personal learning and growth. The program’s mission is expressed in the name “WISDOM”, which is an acronym for “Women Inspired to Succeed and Discover Opportunities through Mentoring”. Starting this February, the “WISDOM” program will work to help Black female students achieve academic and professional success, enhance their social capital and develop positive mentorships with CSUN professional faculty, staff and administrators. The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 17.

“It was very important for the USU to create a program that provides mentors for Black female students at CSUN,” said Resource Centers Assistant Director Freddie Sanchez. “Research has shown that Black female students who are mentored by faculty or staff have a stronger sense of belonging on campus and are more likely to be engaged with the campus community.”

Through this one-on-on mentorship, participants will network with campus professionals, celebrate their Black female identity and successfully navigate academia. Participating students will enhance their personal development by attending and engaging in monthly workshops that will target the developmental goals of this initiative by offering effective, educational life skills.

Black female students at CSUN are encouraged to apply to “WISDOM” now to help find success and empowerment through learning from the inspiring mentors, supportive peers and dedicated workshops. To submit your application or get more information, please visit www.csun.edu/usu/wisdom by Friday, Feb. 17.
