Universal Design Principles

Accessibility can be defined by whether or not a document or web application can be used effectively by people with disabilities. Accessibility strives to ensure everyone can perceive, understand, engage, navigate and interact with technology.

Introduction to Accessibility and Universal Design 

Description:  In this introductory session you will learn about the accessibility and universal design strategies and principles necessary to create inclusive learning environments that support all students, faculty and staff alike.

Email Accessibility 

Description:  This session is the best practices for making email content that is accessible, usable and readable so that the email can reach the highest amount of readers. Participants will learn why accessibility needs to be considered when creating emails step-by-step to ensure they are accessible.

Flyers & Infographics Accessibility

Description:  Attendees will learn why accessibility needs to be considered when developing infographics/flyer and steps to be taken to ensure they are accessible. The first session is an introduction of the best practices for creating accessible infographic/flyer content using Acrobat Pro DC. PDF Tools is recommended before taking this session. The second session is an introduction to the best practices for creating and/or posting accessible infographic/flyer content through Web-One.

Description: This session is an introduction to text to speech or screen reader technology and how screen readers are essential to allow users who are blind or visually impaired to access information.

PDF Scanned & OCR   

Description: This training will cover the fundamentals of Adobe Acrobat scanned documents and Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Participants will learn to utilize the scan tool to conduct an OCR document and provide selectable text. PDF Tools is recommended before taking this session.

Canvas Ally  

Description:  Canvas Ally is a service in Canvas that helps faculty make their digital course content more accessible. It provides guidance on how to improve the accessibility of content, and automatically provides students with alternate formats.

      • Find and use Ally features within Canvas.
      • Preview document and find accessibility issues.
      • Improve accessibility with Ally’s step-by-step instructions.

EquatIO  

Description:  CSUN has a new tool, EquatIO, to help you make your STEM content accessible. This session will demonstrate how to utilize EquatIO features such as speak, type, handwrite, mobile, or screenshot reader. EquatIO is available for Windows, Mac OS, and Google Chrome extension.

Recommended Attendees: STEM Faculty, instructional designers and faculty/instructional support staff

Web Accessibility

Web Accessibility refers to the implementation of best practices, universal design principles and criteria to comply with Section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) in order to eliminate barriers that prevent users who are disabled from interacting and utilizing all that is offered on a web page.  Understanding how to make web pages accessible, it is critical to ensure websites meet legal guidelines and international standards so all individuals have equal access to information.

Description: In this session, you will learn about the CSUN Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) procurement process and the University requirements for procuring Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on campus.

Learning Objectives:

    1. Learn what ICT is and why it is important to consider accessibility when procuring ICT.
    2. Understand the campus ATI procurement process and its various steps.
