News of Interest to Freshmen
- Summer 2012 classes for new freshmen include the Strong Start Freshman Connection (developmental math and UNIV 100) and the new CSU Early Start program at CSUN.
- The Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC) at CSUN offers $10 student rush tickets to selected performances, according to this story in the Sundial. For details, check the VPAC's page describing discounts for CSUN students, staff and faculty. World class live performances for the price of a movie ticket? Not to be missed.
- "Live and Learn: Why We Have College" by Louis Menand. The New Yorker, June 6, 2011. If you wonder whether college is worth it all, take heart: professors are asking the same question. However: "Higher education is widely regarded as the route to a better life. It is sometimes pointed out that Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg were college dropouts. It is unnecessary to point out that most of us are not Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg." That is, if you're thinking critically.
- Cool tool from the Cal State University Chancellor's Office: the CSU Graduation Calculator, which lets you "calculate your chances of graduating from college." Starting CSUN in the fall? Ask your faculty for their advice, too.
- "Books, Stress, Pizza: A Recipe for the 'Freshman 15'?" This NPR radio story discusses why some first-semester freshmen gain unwanted weight and what you can do if this problem applies to you.
- Do you need money to buy your CSUN textbooks? If you are not receiving Financial Aid, you might consider applying for the Bookstore Debit Card Loan Program. If you are receiving Financial Aid, contact Financial Aid and check on the status of your aid. Got Financial Aid questions? Try CSUN's Financial Aid TV. UNIV 100 textbooks, by the way, are available via the library's Course Reserves under UNIV 100. Finally: what if you rent a textbook but later decide you want to buy it? The bookstore says: "From now until around week ten of the semester, students will be able to just pay the difference between the rental fee and the price of the book (new or used, depending on the condition the book that they rented) to convert a rental to a purchase. After week ten, students will have to pay 110% of the retail price to convert from rental to purchase."
- Teach yourself how to read your degree progress report (DPR) using these excellent online guides: Navigating to DPR and MAP, Interpreting DPR and MAP, and Using MAP (My Academic Planner) to Plan Courses. Can't do it? Got questions? Ask your advisor, your best friend, a graduating senior, or a faculty member for help.
- Not sure how to navigate the SOLAR Student Center? Learn how, using the online How To Guides for Students.
- "The Jobless Rate for People Like You": interactive graph from The New York Times showing how the current U.S. unemployment rates affect people based on their gender, age, race, and/or educational attainment.
- For new and continuing freshmen: CSUN has online Academic Planning Guides. Take a look at your future; there's a roadmap for every major and every option. Plan ahead using DPR (Degree Progress Report) and MAP (My Academic Planner). Remember to consult your advisor, too.
