Who We Are and What We Do

At the University Writing Center, we believe that all writers in every discipline benefit from discussing their work with an engaged and supportive audience.  The Writing Center and Tutor Lab assist student writers by offering individualized feedback on their writing, at any stage of the process, including understanding the assignment, brainstorming, forming a thesis, developing content, organizing ideas, and learning proofreading skills.

Writing Center Consultants are Lecturer Faculty and second-year M.A. candidates in English with classroom teaching experience.

  • They work with undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any course which requires writing.

Writing Lab Tutors are graduate and undergraduate students with strong writing skills, most of whom have experience as S.I. Leaders in Stretch Composition classes.

  • The lab serves students enrolled in “Approaches to University Writing” 113AB, 114AB, and 115, and in the Freshman Seminar, U 100.

Our Consultants and Peer Tutors are ready to help students become better writers by acting as advanced peer readers. They can help students think through their projects, model strategies, and share information about academic conventions. They will not edit papers, but will offer students strategies and support as they gain practice finding and fixing their own errors. They will not review take home essay exams or finals unless the professor has granted permission.  Please see a full list of our policies
