Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What’s the GPA requirement for admission to the GE Honors Program?

A. First-Time Freshmen with a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible to join the GE Honors Program. Continuing students at California State University, Northridge with a CSUN GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible to join the GE Honors Program. Presidential Scholars are eligible and are encouraged to join GE Honors. Students transferring from other colleges or universities with a GPA of 3.5 or higher in college work are eligible to join the GE Honors program.

Q. How do I apply for the GE Honors Rising Scholar Award (previously called the Honors at Entrance Scholarship)?

A. The GEH Rising Scholar Award is a $5,000 scholarship (applied to the first year of tuition in two $2,500 installments for fall and spring semester). The GEH Rising Scholar Award is renewable for a second year for an additional $5,000.

Students who 1) have been admitted to CSUN at a first-time freshman; 2) have accepted admission to the GE Honors Program before April 30; and 3) have a high school GPA of 3.75 or higher and an SAT combined score (verbal + math) of 1200 OR have high school GPA of 3.75 or higher and an ACT score of 27 are eligible for the Rising Scholar Award.

Q. What do I need to do to maintain Priority Registration?

A. Effective Spring 2020, the GE Honors Program policy surrounding priority registration has changed. All GE Honors students receive priority registration as a privilege of being in the GE Honors Program. However, in order to maintain priority registration, students must maintain a CSUN GPA of 3.3 or higher AND be actively involved in the program. Students can show their involvement by attending GEH-sponsored events, such as the lecture series or social events. GEH students are expected to attend events, but a minimum of 3 per semester are required maintain priority registration. Priority registration lists are created a year in advance, so participation now ensures your priority registration two semesters from now. For example, students who want priority registration in Fall 2022 must be actively involved in GE Honors programming during Fall 2021. Q. How can I see what events I have attended towards priority registration?

A. Starting SPRING 2020, event attendance is posted to Canvas. Events will show up as assignments on Canvas, you will receive a check for the assignment if you attended the event.

Q. What GEH courses are currently being offered?

A. The current course list for GE Honors can be found at Current Course Schedule.

Q. Where can I find info about GEH events and opportunities?

A. All GEH sponsored events are posted to our Canvas page. You should have received an invitation to join the GEH Canvas page upon your acceptance to the program. You can also add the GEH Calendar to your Google Calendar.

Q. What are the requirements for the GE Honors Certificate?

  1. Complete 15 units of GE Honors courses
  2. Receive a grade of B or better (3.0 GPA) in GE Honors courses
  3. Maintain a CSUN GPA of 3.3

Q. How many GE Honors courses do I have to take each semester?

A. We recommend enrolling in at least one honors GE course each semester. You should meet with the honors director to discuss your individual course plan.

Q. When I have completed the required 15 units for the program when do I receive my certificate?

A. You will receive your GE Honors certificate at the end of your graduating semester.

Q. Do I have to enroll in the GE Honors program to graduate with Honors?

A. You are not required to enroll in the GE Honors program to graduate with University Honors. University Honors are determined by a separate process. For more information about University Honors, go to Commencement and Honors Convocation.

Q. If I have satisfied the required number of units for the GE Honors program, can I still enroll in additional GE Honors courses as they are offered each semester?

A. Yes. However, it would be a better idea to enroll in the upper division courses rather than the lower division courses. Incoming freshman will need those seats to enroll and fulfill their own requirements.

Q. What happens if I receive a grade of B- (minus) or lower in a GE Honors course(s)?

A. At the end of each term, the director GE Honors Program Director will review students' grades. Students who earn a B- or lower will be contacted by the GE Honors Program Director. If you do not receive such an email, you should email her immediately.

Q. What happens if my overall GPA falls below the required maintenance GPA? Can I still take GE Honors courses?

A. If your overall GPA falls below your required maintenance GPA, make an appointment to speak with the GE Honors Program Director immediately.

Q. Are all GE Honors students invited to Honors Convocation when they graduate?

A. No, not all GE Honors students are invited to Honors Convocation. Honors Convocation recognizes students who receive University Honors. University Honors are separate from the GE Honors Program. Information about University Honors is available at Commencement and Honors Convocation.

Students who successfully complete the requirements for a GE Honors Certificate will be notified during the spring semester of the academic year in which they graduate. They will receive their GE Honors Certificates at the annual End-of-Year Reception.

Q. How do I attend events via Zoom?

A. We use the GE Honors Zoom meeting ID for all of our events/discussions. Links are always posted on our Canvas page. So we can accurately take attendance, we ask that you put your full name (and/or Student ID) in the Google Form included in the chat for each meeting so everyone is accounted for.

Q. Do we receive access to different scholarships and opportunities as members of GE Honors?

A. Yes. As soon as we become aware of scholarships and job/internship opportunities, we post them on our Canvas page underneath the respective module. Make sure to turn on notifications and check the Canvas page frequently for deadlines.

Q. If I've lost priority registration, is it possible to regain?

A. Yes, priority registration can be regained by becoming active in the GEH community once again by attending 3 GEH sponsored events.
