Nomination Process

How to Nominate a Title

If you would like to nominate a title for the 2018-2019 Freshman Common Reading Program at Cal State Northridge, please review the criteria to determine whether your suggestion is likely to be a good fit for our program and then fill out the online nomination form. (Note: nominations for 2018-2019 will close on June 1, 2017.)

We accept nominations from all members of the CSUN community: faculty, staff, students, administrators, and alumni.

Titles Nominated for 2017-2018

Here's the complete list of the fifteen titles nominated for 2017-2018. The first five titles were chosen as finalists in October 2016. In January 2017, the committee chose Between the World and Me by Ta-nehisi Coates as the winner.

How We Pick the Books

The Freshman Common Reading Selection Committee members volunteer their service each year. CSUN students, staff, and faculty who would like to join next year's committee are welcome to contact Cheryl Spector on campus at x3932 or via email at before mid-October. CSUN freshmen have offered crucial advice in recent years and are warmly welcome to help us select next year's book.

The Committee typically meets twice: once in October to choose a short list of finalists from the list of nominated titles; and a second time in January to select from the short list the winning title for the upcoming academic year. If you might be interested, take a look at the Committee Guidelines.
