Transfer Student Checklist

Welcome to California State University, Northridge

The checklist will help guide you through the steps you will need to enroll successfully at California State University, Northridge as a transfer student. It’s an exciting time, but one that can be confusing as you enter a new system with new policies and requirements. Following this step-by-step advice should smooth your transition and make sure you avoid common pitfalls.

This checklist contains general information for all First Time Transfer students. Registration requirements and processes many vary depending on specific majors. To find out the specifics of your major, please contact the department of your major directly. For contact information use the CSUN A to Z Listing http://www.csun.edu/atoz/.

ALL ADMITTED TRANSFER STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SEE AN ADVISOR FOR ASSISTANCE IN REGISTERING IN FALL 2008 CLASSES. ADVISEMENT IS MANDATORY FOR SOME MAJORS.

June 24 – July 20, 2008 Register for classes at or after your appointment time. Look for your registration appointment time on your Registration Access Mailer or log in to myNorthridge. Be sure to schedule your advisement appointment before your registration appointment.

July 21, 2008 All eligible students may register for classes, no appointment is required. Be sure to schedule your advisement appoint before you register. Registration holds must be cleared before you can register for classes. Log in to myNorthridge to check for any registration holds.

First-Time Transfer Student Checklist

  1. Watch your mailbox for your Registration Access Mailer, sent May 1. It will contain your CSUN User ID and Password along with your designated enrollment appointment day and time. This is the earliest date you can go online to register. To view your date and time online, log into myNorthridge from the CSUN home page (top right) with your CSUN User ID and Password. In the box named “My Path to Graduation”, select “Student Center (SOLAR)” and click “Enrollment Appointments”. Remember, advisement is strongly encouraged for all majors and students in some majors will have registration “holds” that will require advisement prior to registration.
  2. Make your advising appointment. As a transfer student, you will probably have many questions about course selection. Transfer students receive advisement in the Department of their major. Majors must be declared by the time a student earns 60 units, so all transfer students must have a major before they register. Use the CSUN A to Z pages to find your program: http://www.csun.edu/atoz/. You may call to schedule an appointment or click on the Department for more information. You should make an appointment prior to the designated enrollment appointment day and time that is located on your Registration Access Mailer.
  3. Find out if you need an additional test. The Math Placement Test (MPT) Chemistry Placement Test (CPT) may be required for students who plan on majoring in Engineering, Computer Sciences, Science or Math.   4. Bring your transcripts. Please bring unofficial transcripts with you for all courses taken at community college or at another four-year university.
  5. Check to see if the courses you have already taken are equivalent to CSUN courses. If your transcripts have not been evaluated and placed into your Degree Progress Report, you may visit www.assist.org to learn the equivalent CSUN course to the course taken at any California community college, Cal State University or University of California. Bring a list of these courses with your to your advising appointment. Check out your MAP. One of your advisors will show you how to check your degree progress and plan classes for future terms using My Academic Planner (MAP).   6. Plan ahead for your advising and registration appointment. Plan to stay at your appointment approximately one hour. Purchase campus parking for $5.00 a day without a parking permit. Arrive on campus early to locate the office of the Department of your major. Download freeway directions and a campus map. http://www.csun.edu/maps
  7. Activate your CSUN User ID and Password before your advising appointment and bring them with you to your advising appointment. For help, see setup instructions at: http://www.csun.edu/anr/soc/registration.html or http://www.csun.edu/it/helpdesk. You will be able to register after your advising appointment.
  8. Check the status of your application for missing documents or test scores. Log into myNorthridge and click “View Application Status.” If “Yes” displays on the Summary page under “Missing Docs/Tests,” click the “Detail” link to learn more. Your CSUN User ID is not the same as your nine-digit Student ID numbers. Use your CSUN User ID and Password each time you log into secure CSUN Web Sites
  9. Purchase a 2008-2010 University Catalog (available June 2008) from the Matador Bookstore. The Catalog describes every major and course CSUN offers and provides vital information about academic policies and university regulations. The catalog is also online at www.csun.edu/catalog. Bring the catalog to your advising appointment if you have purchased it before your appointment.
  10. Become familiar with the Schedule of Classes Enrollment Guide at www.csun.edu/anr/soc . It provides calendars, instructions and policies for enrolling in classes for each academic term or semester. It also includes two ways to search the Schedule of Classes: For easy printing, view static course listings in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). These schedules are updated monthly.   11. Make a list of questions about your major and General Education, to ask your advisor during your appointment. While on campus, you may also want to visit Financial Aid (www.csun.edu/finaid), Housing (http://housing.csun.edu) or other campus resources that you can locate from the CSUN homepage.
  12. For updates and important University notices, log into myNorthridge regularly with your CSUN User ID and Password. Also check your CSUN e-mail regularly. E-mail is the University’s official means of communication. http://www.csun.edu/webmail
