- The college was renamed to honor a $7 million gift from Michael D. Eisner, former CEO of the Walt Disney Company. His family's gift established the Center for Teaching and Learning, which has become a premier center in the nation focusing on support for children with learning differences.
- The college's teacher education programs were recognized as some of the best in the nation when it was selected as one of four institutions, from 1,200 institutions considered, to participate in the Carnegie Corporation of New York's Teachers for a New Era initiative, which is re-envisioning teacher education to make it more relevant for today's classrooms.
- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation that will authorize the college to offer the doctorate of education (Ed.D.) degree.
- Rie and Rex Mitchell and their son Scott established the Mitchell Family Endowment to fund in perpetuity the operating costs of the college's Mitchell Family Counseling Clinic, which provides family counseling services for communities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
- Bernard Bragg, a founder of the National Theater of the Deaf will bequeath a portion of his estate to the Department of Deaf Studies for the creation of the Bernard Bragg Deaf Theatre, Signed Arts and Deaf Cinema Endowment.
- Jeanne Adams, a professor in the college, and her husband, Ronald, have created an endowment to support the Ronald and Jeanne Adams Professorship in Educational Leadership and two graduate fellowships.
- The CHIME Charter Elementary School, which serves along with the CHIME Charter Middle School as a training site for managing classrooms that include children with disabilities, was named 2005 Charter School of the Year.
- Addressing a critical need for highly qualified school teachers in the Metropolitan Los Angeles area, the college's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies is providing high quality administrative credential programs at several sights within regional school districts.
- The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) invited Cal State Northridge and 21 other institutions to take part in a reading initiative targeting better reading instruction for teacher candidates at the K-3 elementary school levels.
