Academic Literacy Symposium to be Held at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Feb. 21, 2008) — Seasoned authors Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein will visit Cal State Northridge on Saturday, March 15, to explore ways they can better assist students to become strong writers.

Secondary teachers and university faculty are invited to take part in the literacy symposium scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Student Union Grand Salon located on the east side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

"The symposium will be valuable for both the high school teachers and the university faculty to begin to think and talk about the nature of academic writing in their specific contexts," said Kathleen Rowlands, professor of secondary education.

Graff is currently a professor of English and education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses on teaching undergraduate writing.

Graff teaches alongside his wife, Cathy Birkenstein, who received her Ph.D. in American literature and writes articles on Booker T. Washington, pedagogy and academic writing.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided alongside a publisher’s book fair that will take place throughout the day.

While the symposium is free, reservations are required. For registration, visit https://csun.edu/08litsymposium/.
