CSUN Lecture to Explore Careers Working with the Aging

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 11, 2008) — Recent Cal State Northridge graduate, senior volunteer and author, Mary Kirby, will explore the careers available to young people interested in working with the aging, as well as seniors interested in working outdoors, during a special lecture later this month at the university.

Her presentation, "Senior Volunteers Outdoors," will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, in the Presentation Room of the Oviatt Library located at the heart of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Kirby, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in leisure and recreation studies and a minor in gerontology from Northridge last year, has done extensive research on older men and women who volunteer to work outdoors.

Her book, "Senior Volunteers Outdoors, Los Angeles Edition," provides unique profiles and stories of those seniors who give their time, experience and enthusiasm to benefit those who love the outdoors and the natural world. Kirby spent more than two years visiting wilderness parks and nature centers throughout Southern California putting together the book.

"Her research is timely as the baby boomers begin to enter retirement and to redefine what is meant by productivity in later life," said associate professor of gerontology and nursing Debra Sheets, coordinator of CSUN’s Gerontology Program. "Her book offers exemplary models of seniors who are providing leadership and stewardship to protect the natural environment and resources."
