Northridge Launches Student Extras Casting Program
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 28, 2008) — In conjunction with CSUN’s University Licensing and Department of Cinema and Television Arts, The University Corporation at California State University, Northridge has launched a new student extras casting program in which students will be able to work with film or television production staff, gain industry knowledge, or simply have fun.
Heather Cairns, acting administrative services manager, said the new program offers additional resources to her unit’s film clientele, and an educational and "fun industry experience" for students. Created primarily for students, the program is open to CSUN faculty and staff as well.
To participate in the extras casting program, applicants must visit the University Licensing Web site—www.csun.edu/licensing/extras.php—and join the program’s mailing list. Each semester, the list of students/faculty/staff will be updated; participants may request to be removed or to remain on the list. There will be no fee to become part of the pool of extras.
Students also may request to be production assistants in order to gain more hands-on experience. The additional requirements for this position, she said, are listed on the University Licensing Web site.
Cairns said University Licensing offers no monetary compensation for participation in the program. Compensation is arranged between the extra or production assistant and the production company.
It will be the responsibility of the casting office within the production company to select appropriate extras and production assistants for participation, Cairns noted.
