Cal State Northridge Event Offers Caregivers a Break, at Least for One Day

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 16, 2008) — Members of Cal Sate Northridge’s Gerontology Program and the San Fernando Valley Office of the Alzheimer’s Association are offering caregivers a break, at least for one day, next month.

The seventh annual "Caregiver Wellness Day," scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, is designed to help caregivers find ways, and time, to rejuvenate themselves despite the demands of caring for a loved one.

"The day will focus on renewal, resources and support, and is a way to honor those who are providing care for someone else," said Debra Sheets, associate professor of nursing and gerontology and coordinator of CSUN’s Gerontology Program.

The event includes an update on treatment and prevention of dementia by Dr. Freddi Segal-Gidan, director of the Rancho/USC Alzheimer’s Research Center of California, as well as workshops on a variety of topics involving taking care of yourself while caring for a loved one. It will take place in the Northridge Center of the University Student Union, located on the east side of the campus off Zelzah Avenue. Some free respite care will be available.

Registration is $15 per person, and includes a continental breakfast, lunch and all resource materials. Parking is $5 and available in lot G4 on the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Prairie Street.

For more information, call the Alzheimer’s Association at (818) 830-8590.
