‘Save A Life Tour’ to Stop at CSUN to Underscore the Dangers of Drunk Driving
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 3, 2008) — Young people tend to roll their eyes and stare off into space when someone begins a lecture on the dangers of driving under the influence. They’ve heard it all before, and more than likely do not think it applies to them.
Cal State Northridge officials hope to change some minds on Tuesday, April 8, when CSUN students will be invited to take part in an interactive session that simulates what it really is like to drive while drunk. The session with the "Save A Life Tour" simulator is part of "Get the Matador Buzz," a university effort to educate the campus community about the dangers of driving while intoxicated.
"We hope that this opportunity for students to learn about the risks of drinking and driving and alcohol overuse and abuse will keep our students healthy, and prevent a heartbreaking tragedy," said Dr. Linda Reid Chassiakos, director of CSUN’s Klotz Student Health Center.
Matador Buzz will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Northridge Center of the University Student Union on the west side of the campus off Zelzah Avenue.
The highlight of the event is expected to be the "Save A Life Tour" simulator, which gives visitors a "hands-on" experience with the consequences of driving while intoxicated.
The simulator comes with a disclaimer warning that what visitors are about to see is "very graphic and is not for the faint of heart." The simulator features real-life footage of drinking-and-driving accidents, police response to the scene, emergency room visits and uncensored family responses.
In addition to the simulator, students will also have an opportunity to take part in role playing designed to educate and empower them on how to navigate the challenging circumstances related to alcohol among other interactive activities.
Matador Buzz was made possible by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. It is co-sponsored by Klotz Student Health Center, the University Student Union, CSUN’s Intercollegiate Athletic Department and CSUN’s Department of Public Safety.
