CSUN’s College of Business and Economics Recognized by U.S. Department of Commerce

(NORTHRIDGE, Feb. 12, 2008) — Cal State Northridge’s College of Business and Economics has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Commerce for its vital role in promoting international trade throughout the Los Angeles area.

The college received the honor from Israel Hernandez, assistant to the United States secretary of commerce, last month. Hernandez presented the certificate during a forum on international trade.

"This award is an important recognition for our college," said Rafi Efrat, professor of accounting and information systems. "It was for all the great work our students have done for small business owners in the San Fernando Valley to promote their export and help them become more competitive in the global market."

Efrat developed the undergraduate international trade service learning program with the support of over $300,000 grants from the U.S. Department of Education. It focuses on international trade with a community service-learning component that provides export consulting to local businesses.

Cal State Northridge’s College of Business and Economics is home to several nationally recognized programs where students gain valuable hands-on experience working alongside faculty members and business professionals in a variety of areas. Among its acclaimed programs is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program in which CSUN students provide free tax preparation assistance to low income families and individuals. The college is also home to the San Fernando Valley Economic Research Center, where students work with faculty in collecting assembling, analyzing, and disseminating economic, social and demographic data pertaining to the Valley.
