CSUN Professors Awarded for Talents in Cinema Arts

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Feb. 13, 2008) — Cal State Northridge cinema and television arts professors Alexis Krasilovsky and Jon Stahl are being honored by the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) for their work in writing and producing feature and documentary films.

Krasilovsky’s film, "Women Behind the Camera," won for best documentary long-form, which includes films over 40 minutes in length. Stahl won first place in the feature-length category for his family comedy "Park Avenue Baseball."

In addition to being honored for her documentary, Krasilovsky was asked to serve on the BEA panel.

"This award means acknowledgement by my peers for the hundreds of talented, hard-working camerawomen at the top of their field in countries around the world," said Krasilovsky. "It validates six years of a labor of love in Hollywood, Bollywood, Mexico, France and other countries to help tell the stories of these courageous, pioneering camerawomen and to bring their often-spectacular work to the attention of the world."

"Women Behind the Camera" is the first documentary to examine the lives, work and challenges of camerawomen around the globe. The film features 50 interviews with camerawomen who "were among the first to film in war zones, from helicopters, underwater and on Hollywood sets."

"It should not be so difficult for today's top camerawomen to get top pictures, and for female camera operators to move up and get work," said Krasilovsky. "I hope that their stories of courage and perseverance will also inspire the next generation to pick up cameras and tell their stories."

Stahl is being recognized for his screenplay, "Park Avenue Baseball," about an impoverished 12-year-old boy who loves baseball and dreams of rising above his station. Additionally, his comedy has been selected for the Best of Fest Award.

"This is the first family film that I've written," said Stahl. "For years I’ve wanted to write something that my kids could enjoy. I love baseball, and ever since I introduced my older son to the game and we became involved in Little League, I've harbored the desire to write a script set in the world of youth baseball.

"I’m absolutely delighted by the attention that this labor of love has received so far, and I feel particularly honored to be recognized by my peers in BEA."

Krasilovsky and Stahl will receive this award at the BEA Festival in April.
