CSUN Accounting Students ‘Ace’ Regionals
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 27, 2008) — The CSUN chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, an honor organization for accounting students, won two first place awards during a regional competition held recently in downtown Los Angeles.
According to Bernice Zorilla, Cal State Northridge’s Epsilon Chi chapter president, one team from the chapter took the "Best Practices" prize for novel approaches to promoting financial literacy to college students, outranking competing teams from USC and Cal State East Bay. In fliers passed out on campus and online through the chapter’s Web site, the winning accounting students explained checking and savings accounts, compared terms and interest rates on credit cards and student loans, and counseled students to avoid overextending themselves.
Another Epsilon Chi team won the long-range strategy category for their futuristic vision of the national organization, a decade from now. In the form of a skit, instead of what Zorilla called a "boring PowerPoint" presentation, the team described an international Facebook-type network to connect more students and alumni; professionals using video-conferencing to address students during weekly meetings; and a significant increase in international chapters as accounting standards go global.
In the strategy category, the CSUN chapter beat CSU Fresno, the University of Hawaii and San Francisco State.
The Northridge teams will represent the Western region and compete nationally at the Beta Alpha Psi annual conference, scheduled to meet during August in Anaheim.
Cal State Northridge’s College of Business and Economics is home to several nationally recognized programs where students gain valuable hands-on experience working alongside faculty and business professionals in a variety of areas. Among the college’s acclaimed programs is the Wells Fargo Center for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, which provides business students the opportunity to work on consulting projects with local business and community leaders.
