Bookstein Hall

Dear Nazarian College Students:

This semester has flown by, hasn’t it?

I’m looking forward to having you all back on campus next semester!

First, a big thanks to those of you who joined us at the college's third and final virtual townhall of the semester earlier this month. I enjoyed our conversations during these meetings and hope to see more of you at these events next semester.

Second, I'm proud to share that we have been named a Top 5 “Career Ready” Business School by SkillSurvey. This is an amazing achievement and due in great part to the events and programs offered by our Career Education & Professional Development (CEPD) Center. If you have not yet met with their staff or taken advantage of their services, now is the time! Read more about this ranking

Furthermore, I'd like to extend my congratulations to the newest members of our Beta Gamma Sigma chapter who were inducted earlier this month, and our Beta Alpha Psi chapter for achieving international recognition as a "Superior Chapter" for the 2020-21 academic year, which also came with a $500 award sponsored by KPMG and the KPMG Foundation.

Last week, we held the Fast Pitch Final event where five finalist student teams had three minutes to pitch their startup idea to a panel of judges and members of the audience for a chance to win $4,000 in prizes. Judges included: Avetis Antaplyan, founder and CEO, HIRECLOUT; Tania Mulry, co-founder, Steamwork Ventures; Kevin Herzberg, Prinicpal, Serpentine Partners; and Cesar Montoya, founder, Ringaro. We also welcomed two student entrepreneurship teams from Granada Hills Charter High School and Village Christian High School as special guests to present their business ideas. Kudos to those of you who attended and supported your fellow students. I hope you were able to learn from the judges’ feedback to your peers. Congratulations to the winners: Octobit (1st place), Green Leather Co. (2nd place & Audience Choice), and TONEY (3rd place). To learn more about the event and winners, visit: csunfastpitch.com.

On the topic of entrepreneurship, we've recently received a gift from alumna Emily Serebryany to create the Emily Serebryany Leadership Fund in Entrepreneurship, which is open to all full-time CSUN students  and is awarded to those who can demonstrate a viable entrepreneurial business idea that is in need of seed funds to acheive the next level of development. If this sounds like you, I highly encourage you to apply

On another note, for those of you interested in gaining experiential learning in the field of taxation, the CSUN VITA Clinic is currently looking for volunteers for the VITA Tax Season 2022. The CSUN VITA Clinic provides a cost-free income tax assistance service to low-income taxpayers residing in the San Fernando Valley and beyond. There are many benefits of being a CSUN VITA volunteer such as making an impact in the community, becoming an IRS-Certified Tax Preparer, understanding income tax law and developing your oral communication and leadership skills. The opportunity is open to all majors with no prior experience requirement. If you are interested, please complete a volunteer application. For more information, e-mail vita@csun.edu.

Finally, I'd like to remind you to check the Matadors Forward page for information about returning to campus and the upcoming spring 2022 semester.

That's all for now.

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Regards,

Chandra Subramaniam, Ph.D.
