M. Barrett (Barry) Cleveland serves as Associate Professor of Theatre and Production Manager. For 2008-09 he was also a Faculty Technology Associate in the department of Academic Technology. He was a Fulbright Senior Scholar teaching at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in 1997-1998. While in Asia, he presented guest lectures and workshops at a variety universities and theatres across Taiwan, as well as participating in a seminar, “CAD for Scenography,” and presenting workshops at Yong-in University, Seoul, South Korea. He returned briefly to Taiwan as a Visiting Associate Professor at National Taiwan University in November 2008 teaching workshops in Sound.
During fall of 2000 he was the Production Manager and Lighting Director for the Diamond Tour of the Moscow Ballet’s national tour of The Nutcracker playing in eighteen cities across seven states. He has executed over 200 theatre and dance production assignments for a variety of university and professional companies, including, The Ohio State University, The Contemporary American Theatre Company (Columbus Ohio), The Hip Pocket Theatre, Casa Mañana Summer Musicals, Shakespeare in the Park (Fort Worth, Texas), and for Impact Dance, Dance Express, Canyon Concert Ballet, and High Performance Dance (Fort Collins, CO).
His primary research investigates integrating microcomputer technology into the design and production process. Cross discipline projects in Electrical and Computer Engineering are on-going at both CSUN and Colorado State university. Publications include articles in Dramatics, Theatre Crafts, Theatre Design and Technology, Yale Technical Brief, Lighting Dimensions, Selected Readings of the International Visual Literacy Association, and the Dutch journal Zichtlijnen. The United States Institute for Theatre Technology commissioned Annie and Barry Cleveland to write The Designs of Carrie Robbins, the sixth in a series of monographs recognizing great American Designers to be published in March, 2011.
Awards include the:
- 2009 USITT Herbert D. Greggs Award (with Annie O. Cleveland) for in-depth writing about theatre design and technology in TD&T for the 2008 article “Fort Worth for Entertainment: Billy Rose’s Casa Mañana 1936-1939”
- 2006 Lighting Dimensions International Projection Product of the Year Award for Rosco’s Keystroke, developed with a team of undergraduate students at Colorado State University
- 2004 Braden/Beauchamp Visual Literacy Award from The International Visual Literacy Association for “Seeing the Light”
- 2003 Provost’s N. Preston Davis Award for Instructional Innovation at Colorado State University
Professional memberships include The United States Institute for Theatre Technology (Publications Committee), The International Visual Literacy Association (Board of Directors., The Fulbright Alumni Association, Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Fulbright Association, and Southern California Section of The United States Institute for Theatre Technology.
