The CSU requires all students to take the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics Test (ELM) prior to enrollment in the CSU unless they are exempt by means of scores earned on other appropriate tests such as the ACT, AP, EAP, and/or SAT. The EPT and the ELM are not admission tests; instead, they determine eligibility to enroll in specific courses. If you are required to take the EPT and/or the ELM but fail to do so, you will not be allowed to enroll at CSUN. If you do not perform well on the test(s), you will be placed in an appropriate developmental program during your first term of enrollment.
CSUN offers two placement exams in math and chemistry to determine eligibility to enroll in specific chemistry and math courses at CSUN. The Chemistry Placement test (CPT) is required for students to enroll in Chemistry 101. The Math Placement Test (MPT) is required for students to enroll in Math 102, 103, 104, 105, 150A and 255A. These tests must be taken within two semesters preceding enrollment in courses. The CPT and MPT are on-campus exams only.
The Trustees of the California State University have directed that "all students entering the CSU System be required to demonstrate their proficiency with regard to writing skills as a requirement for graduation".
The following admission tests are administered at CSUN. For registration information, dates, etc., visit the appropriate test websites listed below.
