Naomi Oreskes – Presentation 10/25/12

CSUN’s Sustainability Day event on will be held on Thursday, October 25 from 11am – 3:30pm in the USU Theatre.  The first session (11:00 – 12:15) will be a talk given by Dr. Milind Kulkarni, Director of Engineering Institutes at ITM Group of Institutions in Mumbai, India. He will discuss his efforts to assist rural sugar industries in India in creating sustainable development projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate renewable energy.

The second session (12:30 – 1:45pm) will start by showing a film, “There Once Was an Island”, which provides a case study about a tiny atoll in Papua New Guinea facing escalating climate-related impacts. Due to rising sea levels, the community may need to relocate to a nearby war-ravaged area, becoming environmental refugees. Followed by a facilitated discussion on the raised issues.

The third session (2:00 – 3:15pm) will be a talk given by Naomi Oreskes, author of “Merchants of Doubt,” and professor of History and Science Studies at the University of California, San Diego. She will discuss the disconnect between the state of scientific debate and the way it was being presented in the mass media and perceived by the American people.

FACULTY- please encourage your students to attend the event. If either of the sessions coincides with your class time and is relevant to the class, please feel free to bring them along.  In this case we will have quiz questions on the documentary prepared to hand out to students. We can provide the completed quizzes and solutions to the you, and also provide sign-in sheets for students, which we would return to you after the event. If you are bringing a class we ask that you let us know in advance by responding to this email (sustainability@csun.edu) so that we can be prepared with adequate sign-in sheets and quizzes.
