Sustainability Day Fall 2015

The Institute for Sustainability is hosting our annual Campus Sustainability Day on Tuesday, October 20 in the USU Northridge Center. This year’s theme is “Building Resilience” and we look forward to sharing ideas on sustainability and resiliency.

The first session (9:30am – 10:45am) will feature presentations from two CSUN professors; Dr. Erica Wohldmann (Psychology), will explain how our food choices impact the environment in "Making a Difference, One Bite at a Time"; and Mario Giraldo (Geography) will discuss how to grow food and create compost in his presentation, “Urban Agriculture and the Sustainable City”.

In the second session (11:00am – 12:15pm), Max Aram and Chris Blevins, Co-Founders of Pick My Solar, will discuss the basics of solar energy and how they founded their company in "Leveraging Technology to Increase the Adoption of Solar". Shirley Powers (GRID Alternatives) will talk to students about how they can get involved in the solar industry in “Solar Technology and Job Training for Communities who Need it Most".

During the last session (12:30pm – 1:45pm), Biology professor, Dr. Paula Schiffman, will present “Backyard Ecology in Suburban Los Angeles” discussing the southern California suburban landscape as wildlife habitat as well as gardening with native plants. This will be followed by “Conservation Biocontrol” by Kyra Ankenbruck (Rincon Vitova), in which she will share the importance of avoiding disruptive pesticides and building habitat for native species. She will also showcase beneficial insects.

FACULTY: We invite you to bring your classes. Email us with the session you plan to attend and the enrollment total so we can be sure to accommodate you. We will distribute sign-in sheets for your students and return them to you after the event.
