Personal Laptops connected to the campus network

Policy

Personal laptops connected to CSUN's network provide an access point to the campus network which can be used to spread computer viruses, worms and other forms of attack. To minimize the threat of such attacks, we have developed the following policy for personal laptops.

Scope

This policy is intended for personal laptops owned by staff, faculty or students.

Procedures:

Most personal laptops are not properly updated with the latest updates to the operating system and the anti-virus software. This results in an unprotected device which can be compromised by a virus, worm or other forms of attacks which in turn can be used to make unauthorized access to campus computing resources. To prevent this threat, we asked that the following guidelines must be met.

  1. No personal owned laptops will be allowed to be connected to the campus network via a network cable connection.
  2. Personal laptops can be connected to the campus network using the campus wireless network. When connected to the campus network, they must adhere to the University Policy for Use of Computing Resources.

Responsibilities

IT staff from the departments within Student Affairs are responsible for enforcing this policy.
