The Associated Students Children's Center

Providing Quality Childcare for Students and the Community

Lack of affordable quality childcare has been cited as one of the most critical barriers to the academic success of students with young children.

The Children's Center provides students, staff and the community with a safe, nurturing environment for their loved ones, that won't break their budgets.

The facility was entirely paid for and is partially funded by Associated Students. The center is outfitted with high quality early childhood workers that promote the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of young children. Center Director Arlene Rhines beams with pride as she describes her staff. "Most of our teachers are CSUN alumni and are exceptionally qualified." She is also quick to point out that all of the administrative staff have Master's Degrees and the center always receives top marks from the National Accreditation Board.

The program provides positive, warm interactions among adults and children; planned learning activities appropriate to children's age and development, such as, painting, reading stories, dressing up, and active outdoor play, along with specially prepared hot meals.

Servicing 300 children on a weekly basis, ages 3 months to 5 years, student parents are given priority and fees are based on income eligibility with financial assistance available.

Another option for child care is the Family Child Network. Students who require childcare outside the center's operating hours or who have children with special needs, including bilingual/culturally sensitive providers, or simply keeping siblings together, can opt to find their own child care provider.

The home must be licensed and independently owned and operated, they are reviewed and certified by the Children's Center.  Low to moderate-income families with 3-12 years old are eligible for this program.

Students and staff alike agree that the center provides an invaluable service to them and the community.
