JOB TITLE: GROUP EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR I

WAGE RANGE: $20.00/HOUR; $10.00/HOUR MEETING RATE FOR NON-INSTRUCTION

DEPARTMENT: STUDENT RECREATION CENTER - FITNESS PROGRAMS

WORK SCHEDULE: PART-TIME. SCHEDULE VARIES BASED ON DEPARTMENT NEED. WORK SCHEDULE TO BE DETERMINED BY SUPERVISOR. 


JOB DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Coordinator, Fitness, develops group exercise routines and programs for a variety of skill levels. Routines and programs incorporate a variety of currently popular styles which could include kickboxing, hip-hop, step, muscle conditioning, yoga and Pilates.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Teaches group exercise classes
  • Develops and provides creative and progressive exercise routines
  • Selects music that has the correct beats and rhythm based on class
  • Promotes correct form, alignment, and aerobic dance positions
  • May assist with special programs, services or projects on occasion
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/TRAININGS

  • Minimum of 4 months or 1 semester of experience in instructing group exercise classes AND
  • Minimum of 1 current certification or training from the following categories:
    • A current nationally recognized Aerobics certification (ACE, AFAA, NETA, or comparable)
    • A degree in a related field
    • A current specialty certification or training from a nationally recognized certifying agency (Yoga, Pilates, Spinning®, Zumba® or comparable)

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • *Current American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED certification recommended
  • Continued, supervisor-approved professional development required during course of employment
  • Mandatory attendance at Student Recreation Center (SRC) and University Student Union (USU) employee orientation and trainings, as well as department specific trainings and meetings

*Training is periodically offered free of charge by the USU. Applicants unable to attend USU-sponsored training are required to obtain certification at their own expense prior to starting work.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is typically performed indoors. Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, finals weeks, and during academic interim and break periods. Ability to adhere to deadlines. Ability to work in shared office space as applicable. Must be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in work environment. Position requires daily public contact. Demonstrated physical abilities include fingering, handling, and reaching with hands and arms; walking, running, skipping , jumping, stooping kneeling crouching, or crawling. Employee must occasionally sit and/or stand for extended periods. Employee must be able to talk and hear. Employee must frequently move and/or lift 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    • A current specialty certification or training from a nationally recognized certifying agency (Yoga, Pilates, Spinning®, Zumba® or comparable) OR
    • Certified as a master trainer from a nationally recognized aerobics organization or certifying agency (AFAA, ACE, Zumba, YogaWorks, or comparable) OR
    • Certified or trained in all Pilates formats (Reformer, Chair, Cadillac, and Mat Pilates) from a nationally recognized certifying agency (Stott, Peak, etc)
